There's so much more to do.
At Habitat, we seek to put God’s love into action, by bringing people together
to build homes, communities and hope. Our entire ministry is built on the
concept of partnerships that build community. We partner with families in
need of safe decent affordable housing, we partner with individuals and
corporations for the volunteer labor we need to build and renovate housing and
we rely on corporations and individuals to support our work with financial
contributions.
Our goal is to end poverty housing in Oakland County. We do that by providing a hand up to families, which leads to homeownership for low to middle income families who otherwise would never have an opportunity to own a home.We do not give away homes. Our partner families purchase the homes from us after participating in the rehab
or construction of their home. We then provide them with a no profit mortgage that is affordable and sustainable. Those mortgage payments come back to Habitat to support more families.
Habitat has provided safe decent and affordable housing for over 600,000 families worldwide. We are the 6th largest homebuilder in the US. In the next 3 years we plan to engage over 1 million volunteers in Michigan, as we participate
with other affiliates in the ReBuild Michigan campaign.
In Oakland County, we have helped 160 families since our affiliate was formed. Last year we served 20 families and we
expect to serve 14 families this year. Our challenge is that we are barely making a dent in the affordable housing problem in Oakland County. In 2012 we took in 680 applications from families looking for help with housing but we were only able to help 20.
We have a housing crisis in Oakland County. We have over 100,000 people living in poverty. We don’t have
safe, affordable rental property for low to mid income families and the average age of a homeless person is nine
years old.
Yet in Oakland County, we live in contradiction. Ours is a silent housing crisis. We live in one of the nation’s
most affluent counties. We can go about our lives and never really have to face the poverty. Yet hard working,
deserving families are suffering. Children are suffering in school and our future is suffering as a result.
One of our newest partner families is Daquanda Campbell and her ten year old son Keone. Daquanda wants for her
son, the same things that you and I want for our families, a safe place to call home. Yet recently, both Daquanda and Keone witnessed a young man get shot right outside their apartment. Daquanda is ready to work hard to create a
safe environment for her family. But you know, Daquanda now has hope. And our focus must be on those still struggling in our community.
I ask you for a moment to consider what it might be like to live
day to day where bullets are flying outside the paper-thin
walls of an apartment where you are trying to raise a family.
I hope you might be asking how you can get involved or how you can do more. Yes, we need your financial support. A donation of any size will help us provide a hand up to another family in need of safe decent affordable housing.
Together we are community… and I believe that together we can change the world.
Thank you,
