A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. Our entire ministry is built on the concept of partnerships that build community. Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

We don’t give homes away! Our partner homeowners are people of low to moderate income seeking safe, affordable homes to purchase in Oakland County. They agree to partner with Habitat Oakland County’s donors, volunteers and staff based on need, their ability to pay, and their willingness to put in 300 hours of sweat equity on their home in advance of the purchase. Read more about our partner homebuyers here Partner Homeowner Stories.

Habitat for Humanity is a global brand providing housing for over 1,000,000 families worldwide. Here in the United States, Habitat is the 15th largest residential builder with a focus on maximizing energy efficiency through green building and the LEED Certification program.

2018 marks our 23rd year serving and empowering families on their path to homeownership and we celebrate that more than 300 people are now living in safe, decent and affordable homes. We take a creative approach in our continued commitment to building homes for our partner homeowners and to that end, we offer several programs.

  • Veterans Initiatives: serving veterans who have so faithfully served our country
  • Habitat University Program: assists those who are not yet ready for homeownership, with classes and coaching, to improve their financial situation and prepare them for the home buying experience.

There is so much more work to do and many more people who have completed the application process for a hand up from Habitat Oakland County to secure safe, affordable housing. Whether you are a volunteer, a donor, or an advocate of Habitat Oakland County, please know we are grateful for your past involvement and we continue to need your support.

Together, we are community and I believe that, together, we can change the world.

Thank you,

Tim Ruggles, Executive Director/CEO
