About Us
Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County’s mission has a hyper-local focus with a world vision which engages donors, homeowners, neighbors, and volunteers working together to build better living environments.
Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit housing organization that works in nearly 1,400 communities across the United States and more than 70 countries around the world. It started in 1976 by a group of people who wanted to help those in need of adequate shelter by helping them to build decent and affordable homes by working side-by-side with volunteers (to keep costs low). Today, Habitat has helped over 59 million people achieve strength, stability, and independence through safe, decent, and affordable shelter.
On a local level, Habitat came to Oakland County in 1995 and to date, we have helped over 1,700 individuals and families on their journey towards homeownership. Habitat Oakland’s mission has a hyper-local focus with a world vision which engages donors, homeowners, neighbors, and volunteers working together to build better living environments. Habitat Oakland raises all of its funds locally and receives limited funding from Habitat for Humanity International. As part of Habitat’s Global partnership, when a home is built in Oakland County, Habitat Oakland tithes a portion of the funds raised to build a house in a developing country.
Our Vision
Our vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
Our Mission
Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.
At Habitat Oakland, we are proud of the impact we’ve had and want to do more. We have a goal of 2025 by 2025 and plan to serve 2,025 families and individuals by the year 2025.
Thus far, this has required us to increase the number of those that we are able to help annually by tenfold! We are currently on track to reach this ambitious goal due to the success of our innovative, volunteer-fueled, and donor-driven programs.
We know that stable, affordable living conditions lead to improved health, stronger childhood development, and the ability to plan for the future. In today’s complicated world, a place to call home is more important than ever. Every one of us deserves the opportunity for a better future. Strong and stable homes build strong and stable
communities.
Since 1995, Habitat Oakland volunteers, staff and donors have served nearly 1,700 individuals and families through building and rehabilitating homes. Our efforts extend across the county, with a primary focus on Pontiac, Southfield and Madison Heights.
As our first homeowner Doreen Marquis has said, becoming a Habitat Oakland Homeowner changed the trajectory of her family forever. She was able to send all three of her children to college and secure a brighter future for each of them. The success of Doreen’s family – and many other partner families like hers – demonstrates the impact homeownership has on individuals.
We know that homeownership has an impact on communities as well. In more recent years, Habitat Oakland has pivoted to focus on rehabilitating properties in addition to building new homes. We partner with municipalities to revitalize, stabilize, and improve local neighborhoods. Habitat Oakland acts as the developer and rehabilitates homes that are often blighted or slated for demolition.
