Sunflower Growing Competition
April 28 - August 31
Join the Habitat Oakland community, our CORE Volunteers and homeowners as we plant sunflower seeds at our own homes and share in the growth of the seed of the sun throughout the summer of 2021!
Spend time outside with your family and neighbors this summer and share the experience with your Habitat Oakland community. Anyone is welcome to participate!
How to be part of the contest:
- Planting should begin in late April after the threat of frost has passed.
- Take pictures of you and your family planting sunflower seeds in a sunny area of your yard.
- Share with Habitat Oakland community the growth progress of your flowers.
- Win $50 in Amazon gift cards by growing the tallest sunflower stalk, the largest sunflower head, or becoming the BEST at sharing the experience! (Details below.)
Picture submissions of sunflower planting and progress can begin the first week of May. Send your photos to the Habitat Volunteer Department at firstname.lastname@example.org. Make sure to include your name and phone number in the emailed submissions. Send your best sunflower progress photo every week! Photos may be used in our social media posts. Check us out at @HabitatforHumanityOC on both Facebook and Instagram.
Contest ends August 31, 2021. Final contest photo submissions must be received by 5 pm on August 31, 2021.

Judges will determine the winners the first week of September and winners will be contacted at the phone number provided in the emails that accompany the sunflower photos. Judges decisions are final. Submission of photos is your consent for their use on our social media. Email addresses and phone numbers will not be used for any purpose other than the sharing of this sunflower growing contest. Sunflowers must be homegrown on your own property. Entrants may use any seed, soil or fertilizer they choose. To avoid unwanted animal guests, please harvest sunflower heads when seeds have matured.
