Beloved Community

Rooted in the legacies of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the passage of the Fair Housing Act, Habitat for Humanity strives to build the Beloved Community by mobilizing people to reach out across cultural divides and celebrate our shared humanity. In 2022 six nonprofits linked arms to establish the Beloved Community Coalition for Pontiac-based organizations. The Beloved Community Coalition envisioned a more collaborative landscape to share resources and create equitable communities through volunteerism. In doing so, people from all backgrounds are empowered to know they have unique talents that intrinsically equip them to be of service.

The Beloved Community Coalition seeks to dismantle the discriminatory bias that specific knowledge, skills, or abilities are needed to volunteer. On the contrary, the Beloved Community Coalition can promote the message that diverse experiences and talents are what make volunteerism so powerfully engaging and transformative. Since its establishment, Oakland Family Services, Oakland University, and Centro Multicultural La Familia have also joined the Beloved Community Coalition. Any organization with a desire to build a communal table is encouraged to participate in the coalition and any individual with a heart to uplift others is welcomed to volunteer.
