ReStore Opportunities

The Habitat for Humanity of Oakland County ReStores sell donated materials to raise money in support of Habitat Oakland’s Homeownership Program.

Habitat Oakland ReStore volunteers bring new skills and build capacity to help provide discounted building materials and home goods to the community. Habitat Oakland uses funds raised by its ReStores to help families build, rehabilitate and repair homes. By giving your time and talents, you can help the Habitat Oakland ReStores do more to support homebuilding projects that benefit families in Oakland County.

Join our ReStore staff in Waterford or Southfield for a morning or afternoon of organizing and moving merchandise, customer service, helping our drivers and more. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to work and be part of Habitat Oakland’s mission.  Please contact our Volunteer Department at volunteer@habitatoakland.org for more information on group or individual ReStore volunteer opportunities.

To feel fully prepared for your day at one of our ReStores, please review the documents and videos below:

Q: Do I need to have special skills?
A: No experience is required – just a willingness to work and to learn! Volunteers should be comfortable lifting 20-40 pounds for Merchandising, Driver Helper, Home Goods Department Leader, and Organizer positions.  However, there are plenty of opportunities where no lifting is necessary as well!

Q: How old does a ReStore volunteer need to be?
A: To volunteer at our ReStores, you must be at least 14 years of age. Youth ages 14-17 are not permitted to use power tools or be on ladders. All youth volunteers must bring fully completed a Youth Liability Waiver form filled out and signed by their parent/guardian.

Q: When can I volunteer at the ReStore?
A: Our volunteer days are available every day. The ReStores offer both a morning  and an afternoon shift.  Each volunteer may sign up for one, or both shifts during a day.

Q: What do I need to bring to the ReStore?
A: Please bring work gloves, lunch or snacks, water bottle, and sturdy/closed shoes (no flip flops, sandals, or Crocs).

Q: What if I’m doing community service for school or for the courts?
A: All school community service hours can be verified by our manager supervising you during your shift.  All court ordered community service must contact our Volunteer Department at volunteer@habitatoakland.org in order to set up a meeting prior to volunteering.  In the e-mail please include the details of your offense and your availability.  You cannot perform your community service hours with Habitat if your offense is related to a violent crime.  The only volunteer opportunities available for court-ordered community service are in our ReStores.

Merchandising – Are you a give and take kind of person? You will fit right in with us! Come be social and have fun in our ReStores! Our Merchandising Volunteers will help our donors as they unload their donations, and provide each donor with the appropriate paperwork for their donation. After taking the donations, the focus will be pricing the donated items, and giving them to the appropriate department.

Home Goods Product Organizer – If you don’t like going to the gym but want to stay fit, then this is the place for you!  Our Organizer Volunteers will move our merchandise individually or in a group for select departments, making our ReStores look the best they can!

Greeter – Your hair looks great today! Do you like giving people compliments and making them feel good? We are looking for you to join our community of volunteers!  Our Greeter Volunteers will welcome and greet customers as they enter the store and wish them a great day on their way out. In between the friendly community our Greeters will also keep store areas neat, tidy and safe.

Home Goods Department Leader – We know you are a go-getter! Get the job done while you work with a fantastic team of people and bond over a lamp. Our Department Leader Volunteers make sure the merchandise in their assigned department is cleaned, priced, and brought out on the sales floor in a timely manner. Each Leader Volunteer ensures that merchandise is displayed nicely and answers customer questions. Lastly, they make sure all furniture or other donated items get the (sometimes much needed) TLC they need!
